The Dáil Public Accounts Committee is demanding answers from the Health Service Executive over the cost and the selection of outside consultants to carry out investigations.
Some of these inquiries and reviews have looked at standards of care in parts of the health service.
Committee Chairman John McGuinness said it is not good enough that former HSE staff are sometimes chosen to do this work.
Documents seen by RTÉ News show that several inquiries were commissioned without a competitive tendering process.
The documents also reveal that some people working on the reviews are paid a fee close to €1,000 a day.
One investigation that the PAC is likely to focus on is an examination of allegations that a vulnerable person was placed at risk while in care.
This resulted in two outside investigations - one costing in region of €98,000 plus almost €9,000 for a support worker on the review.
Another inquiry followed to find out if there any other similar cases. This cost €58,000 to date and was carried out by a consultancy company staffed by some former HSE workers. Both reports remain unpublished.
The HSE's own guidelines state that former employees who retired early cannot be used as consultants without a competitive tendering process.
RTÉ News asked the HSE detailed questions about the awarding of some of the contracts.
A spokesperson said the HSE will appear before the PAC on 2 April and it would not be appropriate to comment before then.
