MEP Brian Hayes has said a resolution to the Greek debt crisis needs to be agreed as the uncertainty surrounding the issue is pulling Europe back in terms of growth.
Speaking on the RTÉ's This Week programme on RTÉ Radio One, Mr Hayes said there is a firm determination on the part of all EU institutions in Brussels to resolve the issue, principally because as long as it remains unresolved, he said it remains a drag on European growth.
The Foreign Ministers of Germany and Greece are to meet in Berlin later today after weeks of difficult relations between their countries to prepare the ground for talks tomorrow between their heads of government Angela Merkel and Alexis Tsipras.
Germany and Greece strongly disagree about how to handle the Greek debt crisis.
Mr Hayes, has said a deal needs to be agreed and that to do so Greece must realise that a new programme is required. He said a programme that will allow Greece to grow and allow investment to flow into the country, as well as a programme where there is credibility, is needed. He said credibility is something that's been missing from the alternatives offered by the Greek government thusfar.
And he said he hopes the problem can resolved at tomorrow's meeting.
