General Secretary of SIPTU, Jack O'Connor, has said pay increases should be implemented by employers in order to reinforce recovery in the domestic economy.

Speaking on RTÉ's The Week in Politics, Mr O'Connor, said in order to increase consumption in the economy, wages must be increased.

SIPTU laid out their plans in January to embark on a campaign calling for pay increases of 5% across the economy.

The union will also seek to secure a minimum wage of €11.45 an hour and the abolition of the Universal Social Charge.

Today Mr O'Connor said the union would achieve pay rises and he said that he hoped they would favour the lower paid workers.

In relation to a warning from the Minister for Public Expenditure, Brendan Howlin, who said their is "a limited pot of money", Mr O'Connor said the pot needed to be increased.

He said by giving people more money in their pocket, they will in turn spend more, which will generate more money for the Government.

"The first thing we contain that should be done in that regard is to increase wages across the economy for workers irrespective of whether they work in the public sector or private sector and we are in a situation now where we can do that" he added.
