A group representing buskers has condemned the attack on the office of a Dublin city councillor who supported the introduction of by-laws on street performance.
Mannix Flynn estimates that €1,000 worth of damage was caused when a beer barrel was thrown through his office window at around 4am on Tuesday, just hours after the council voted to introduce a permit system.
Cllr Flynn, who lives above his premises, was woken by noise; heard the window being smashed and shouted at one man he saw in the street.
He then saw grafitti 'we won't pay to play' scrawled on the wall and personal attacks relating to his experience of institutional abuse.
"It is unnerving and shocking" he said. "Other councillors are very concerned with someone attacked for doing their job".
Cllr Flynn had spoken on behalf of residents, retail workers and some buskers who complained about the noise levels caused by some street performers.
"I don't mind being challenged but I certainly drawn the line at my premises being attacked and me personally being attacked".
Andy Kavanagh of the band Key West who campaigned against the new by-laws condemned the attack.
"It's not democracy, it's a vile act. Councillors are entitled to have a different opinion, that's the way it works".
He pointed out that his group was not campaigning against having to pay for a permit system but about the decibel level in the by-laws.
Meanwhile gardaí are studying CCTV from a number of neighbouring premises to try to identity those behind the attack.
