Aer Lingus expects to cut 150 jobs

Aer Lingus anticipates 150 net job losses from its latest voluntary severance scheme, according to a letter sent to Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton.

In the letter, Aer Lingus Director of HR Operations Brian Bowden confirms that the airline currently employs 3,965 between head office, IT, cabin crew and maintenance.

Mr Bowden goes on to say that it is anticipated that the voluntary redundancy programme may see 150 redundancies across the three airports at Dublin, Cork and Shannon.

He confirms: "Further restructuring will see potentially up to a further 120 voluntary and agreed severances where roles may then be replaced at a lower level or cost by new hires."

Mr Bowden says the redundancies will take effect from 1 March to 31 December.

He also tells the minister that the voluntary redundancies that will arise result from a range of restructuring and productivity initiatives.

Earlier this week, Aer Lingus stressed that the voluntary severance scheme has nothing to do with the current bid for the airline from IAG.

It said that the final number of redundancies will depend on the take-up for the scheme, and the categories of staff who apply.

Sources have confirmed that the airline could secure a saving of up to 20% by replacing longer-serving higher-paid staff on so-called "legacy" rates by newer entrants on lower rates of pay.
