An investigation has begun into the disappearance of €9,000 from an evidence bag at a garda station in Co Dublin.

The money was part of €26,000 originally stolen from a shop and post office in Lusk in January.

It was discovered missing when the shop's owner went to Balbriggan Garda Station to collect it.

The Garda Commissioner has appointed a detective superintendent from Ballymun to investigate the matter.

None of the missing €9,000 has so far been recovered.

There are concerns the disappearance may damage the prosecution of the suspects in the Lusk robbery.

Three men were arrested on 19 January following the robbery.

The stolen money, which was recovered by gardaí, was entered into evidence at Balbriggan Garda Station to be counted and photographed before being returned to its owner.

Gardaí discovered a tear in the bag and €9,000 missing.

The evidence bag has been fingerprinted and forensically examined.
