Obama confirms death of US hostage held by IS

US President Barack Obama has confirmed the death of Kayla Jean Mueller, who had been held by the self-styled Islamic State in Syria.

Ms Mueller was a humanitarian worker from Arizona and had travelled to the Turkish-Syrian border in December 2012 aiming to help Syrian refugees fleeing civil war.

The American aid worker was kidnapped in Aleppo, Syria in August 2013 after she left a Doctors Without Borders hospital.

The family said she has been held by Islamic State militants since then.

The jihadists' claimed last week that Ms Mueller died as a result of Jordan carrying out airstrikes against the Islamic State in Syria.

Mr Obama released a statement saying: "No matter how long it takes, the United States will find and bring to justice the terrorists who are responsible for Kayla's captivity and death."

Ms Mueller's family have released a letter which they say was written by her when she was in captivity.
