More bodies recovered in AirAsia search

More bodies were brought to shore today a week after an AirAsia flight crashed into the Java Sea.

A US helicopter brought three bodies to the Pangkalan Bun airbase, followed by the Singapore Navy which brought in one more.

Officials said at least 34 bodies have been recovered so far.

Four large objects, which are likely parts of the plane, have been located on the sea bed, according to officials.

However, bad weather, the tide and strong currents have prevented search teams from investigating the sites to confirm the wreckage and possibly retrieve the black boxes.

The Indonesia AirAsia Airbus A320-200 crashed into the Java Sea while en route from Indonesia's second-biggest city Surabaya to Singapore with 162 people on board on 28 December.

No survivors have been found.

A multi-national task force of ships, planes and helicopters have been scouring the northern Java Sea and coastline of southern Borneo to recover the bodies of victims and locate the wreck of Flight QZ8501 and its black box flight recorders.

Today, Japan's Self Defense Force joined the international search.

The Japanese government has sent two destroyers and three helicopters to help with the search for the wreckage and bodies.

Although nine ships from four countries have converged on the area, with teams of divers including seven Russian experts standing ready, winds and high waves have meant progress has been agonisingly slow.

The crash was the first fatal accident suffered by the AirAsia budget group.

The airline has come under pressure from Indonesian authorities, who have suspended its Surabaya to Singapore operations saying the carrier only had a licence to fly the route on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Indonesia AirAsia said it would co-operate with the transport ministry whilst it investigates the licence.

A joint statement from Singapore's civil aviation authority and Changi Airport Group said that AirAsia had the necessary approvals to operate a daily flight between Surabaya and Singapore.
