Met Éireann has said that wind gusts of 130-150km/h are possible in exposed areas from 9pm tonight until midday tomorrow.

A Status Red alert has been issued for coastal and mountain areas of Donegal, Sligo, Mayo, Galway, Clare, Limerick and Kerry.

Dozens of schools in the northwest and midlands are closed due to overnight snow and frost.

Difficult driving conditions have also been reported in many areas across the country.

While temperatures will rise during the day, Met Éireann says strong winds and heavy rain will develop from this afternoon.

Three Met Éireann weather warnings are in operation across the country.

Along with the Status Red alert, a Status Orange wind warning is in place for the rest of the country with winds of 90-130km/h expected.

A less severe Status Yellow rainfall warning is in place for Connacht, Donegal, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick have a rain warning in place.

Care is still needed on many roads around the country.

Up to 8cm of snow was earlier reported around Letterkenny in Co Donegal.

AA Roadwatch is reporting that the worst-affected areas in Co Cork are Fermoy and higher grounds.

Some local roads in Roscommon are impassable.

Roads are still very icy around Co Wicklow and motorists are advised to drive with care.

AA Roadwatch says the Sally Gap and Wicklow Gap are passable, but that extreme care is needed.

Slippery roads are also reported around Athlone, Kilkenny, Drogheda, Ennis, Thurles and Carlow Town.

Poor road conditions were also reported in Longford, Galway, Kerry, Limerick, Meath and Kildare.

Primary routes in the midlands are passable but conditions are described as treacherous on the old N6 Galway to Dublin road, which was not treated with salt last night.

Bus Éireann says there are delays to some of its services.

It said the school transport network was paralysed because of the treacherous conditions on local roads earlier today.

A number of schools across the country were closed for the day.
