A telephone counselling service has reported that over half its callers (54%) described an experience of sexual abuse.
That is an increase of 3% on last year.
Connect telephone counselling service, which was established in 2006 following demands from survivors of institutional abuse, reported a 22% increase in individual callers so far this year.
The most common setting for abuse to have happened to callers is in the family, followed by the community.
Institutional abuse accounted for 16% of calls.
Calls are expected to reach 10,000 by the end of the year.
Connect is available Wednesday to Sunday from 6-10pm at 1800 477 477 in the Republic of Ireland and 0800 477 477 77 from the UK.
