The CEO of Dublin Simon Community has said the organisation operates a "good neighbour" policy around its homeless facilities.
Sam McGuinness said business people and others need not fear the opening of a new hostel in the city centre.
There have been a number of objections to a proposed hostel on Fitzwilliam Street Lower, which will include a five-day-a-week nursing service and a weekly GP service to help clients deal with addiction and other medical problems.
Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr McGuinness said there would be no methadone dispensed from the premises, although needles would be available for those who required them, to promote safe usage.
Methadone dispensing was one of the reasons cited by up to 25 businesses in the area that have objected to the hostel.
Mr McGuinness said the hostel already operates in a premises on Harcourt Street, which is also at the heart of the business district.
It caters for up to 30 people. Dublin Simon wants to move the hostel to a former hotel near Baggot Street.
Mr McGuinness expressed surprise that business owners had objected to the hostel.
"Sometimes you have residents who are not informed of what we do and how we do it and why we do it, and not informed of our neighbourhood policies.
"I'm surprised at business. I can't recall having had complaints in the past from business. In fact, we have a huge amount of donors, large and small, who run businesses in that area."
He added: "I have no doubt that the Simon Community resident in that area could actually help (the objectors) with a neighbourhood policy to ensure that if there are issues outside of the building or anywhere in the neighbourhood, we use our own patrols to check what's going on in the neighbourhood because our reputation in what we do inside the building and outside the building is very important to us."
