Pregnant woman case 'difficult', says Varadkar

Minister for Health Leo Varadkar has said there should be no rush into any particular decisions until it is clear how the case of a pregnant woman who has brain trauma develops.

The woman is being kept on life support in hospital.

The minister said he did not like to speak about individual cases and there was a grieving family and doctors facing very difficult clinical dilemmas.

Mr Varadkar said that he was in his post for five months and in that time there have been two difficult cases, with one ongoing.

He said Ireland was also facing two challenges to its laws at European and international level.

Mr Varadkar said he was aware of some limited details of the case when he made what he believed was a measured speech on abortion in the Dáil earlier this week.

He said he had no control over the timing of the speech but did not want to give a stock address, knowing what he knows over the last five months.

Mr Varadkar added he did not believe the issue would ever go away.

He also called for the privacy and confidentiality of the family to be respected, given the reporting restrictions imposed by the High Court.

Earlier, the Tánaiste has told the Dáil that she has discussed the case with Mr Varadkar and the Taoiseach.

During Leaders' Questions in the Dáil, Joan Burton said Mr Varadkar had informed her of the case on Sunday evening.

However, she said the matter was not discussed at Cabinet.

She said she could not comment on the case as she understood the family are to take a legal case early next week.

She described the case as tragic and expressed her sympathy to the family.

The Tánaiste said she understood the woman had been treated for a serious brain trauma before being transferred to a hospital in her local area.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny said: "This is an absolutely sensitive case - let anybody put themselves in the position of this family, with the trauma, and the stress and the pressure that's involved here. I do not want to say anything about this or any individual case here."

"As I said yesterday in Dublin, there are circumstances that arise occasionally where complexities exist, obviously, and they are outside the scope of the legislation," he said.

"As I repeated yesterday, for the first time in 20 years a Government faced up to the challenge of legislating for what the Supreme Court determined that the people had put into our constitution.

"So obviously this matter is now one of grave importance to the family of the woman concerned and obviously I do not want to say any more about it at this stage," he added.

Asked if the Government will take any action, the Taoiseach said:

"In all of these kinds of cases, medical advice and legal advice is sought.

"The legislation is in place in respect of the constitutional referendum which was adopted by the people.

"And that legislation is now following the Supreme Court ruling of 1991," he said.
