Three men have been arrested by gardaí investigating a post office robbery in Co Donegal.

A group of three men armed with a knife, hammer and sledge hammer/hatchet entered Manorcunningham post office at about 10.15am.

A sum of money was taken in the robbery, staff were threatened and gardaí said a considerable amount of damage was done.

The men escaped in a van which travelled towards Newtowncunningham.

Gardaí stopped a van close to the border at the village of Killea and three men, aged in their 20s and 30s, were arrested.

The three are being held at Letterkenny and Buncrana garda stations.

A Royal Mail postal van had been hijacked by three men in Foyle, Co Derry earlier in the morning at about 9.50am, which had fled in the direction on Co Donegal.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Letterkenny Garda Station on 074-9167100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111 or any garda station.
