South African judge Thokozile Masipa has sentenced Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius to five years in prison for the culpable homicide of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Pistorius wiped his eyes as the judge handed down her verdict.
The athlete was convicted last month for shooting the 29-year-old model dead on Valentine's Day last year.
Judge Masipa, who is only the second black woman to rise to South Africa's bench, said the sentence had to be "fair and just to society and to the accused".
In her 12 September verdict, Judge Masipa cleared Pistorius of murder, saying the state had failed to prove his intent to kill when he fired four rounds through the door of a toilet cubicle.
Pistorius said he fired in the mistaken belief an intruder was lurking behind the door at his luxury Pretoria home.
He was escorted out of court by police to a holding cell.
Ms Steenkamp's family said the five-year sentence was correct and her father Barry said he was "very glad" the trial was over.
The family's lawyer, Dup De Bruyn, said "justice was served today".
Pistorius was also given a three-year sentence on a firearms charge, which was suspended for five years.
His lawyer Barry Roux said he expected Pistorius to serve ten months behind bars, with the rest of his sentence served under house arrest.

However, the South African state prosecutor said Pistorius is likely to serve one third of his sentence behind bars.
A spokeswoman for the ANC Women's League said they want the state to appeal against Pistorius' conviction for culpable conviction.
A spokesman said the state had still not decided whether to appeal against the culpable homicide conviction.
The athlete, known as 'Blade Runner' because of his carbon-fibre prosthetics, became one of the biggest names in world athletics at the London 2012 Olympics when he reached the semi-finals of the 400m against able-bodied athletes.
His uncle Arnold said the Pistorius family "accepts" the five-year jail term.
"Oscar will embrace this opportunity to pay back to society," he said in a brief statement to reporters before asking for the media to respect his family's privacy.
Pistorius was taken from the court in an armoured police vehicle to Pretoria's Kgosi Mampuru prison.
