FF's Connaughton tops poll in Roscommon/S Leitrim

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 11 Oktober 2014 | 22.40

Fianna Fáil's Ivan Connaughton has topped the poll in the Roscommon/South-Leitrim by-election on 7,502 votes with Independent candidate Michael Fitzmaurice second on 6,371 votes.

Independents Des Guckian, Gerry O'Boyle and Tom Crosby have been eliminated and their votes are distributed.

The elimination of other candidates is considered more likely to result in a majority of their votes going to Mr Fitzmaurice.

Meanwhile after the sixth count in the Dublin South-West by-election Sinn Féin's Cathal King leads with Paul Murphy of the Anti-Austerity Alliance in second.

After the distribution of the votes of independent candidates Colm O'Keeffe and Tony Rochford, Green Party candidate Francis Noel Duffy, Declan Burke, People Before Profit candidate Nicky Coules, Fianna Fáil's John Lahart and Labour's Pamela Kearns, Mr King leads the poll on 7,828.

Mr Murphy is on 7,436, leaving him 392 votes behind.

The by-elections were held to fill the vacancies left by the election of Brian Hayes and Luke Ming Flanagan as MEPs.

Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams said the Government parties were trounced in the Roscommon/South-Leitrim by-election.

He said the Government keep talking about the democratic revolution but these election results prove a revolution is already under way.

But Minister of State Michael Ring has defended the performance of the Government in the by-elections.

Mr Ring said Fine Gael's showing of around 17% in Roscommon/South-Leitrim was very good.

He insisted the Government parties were the only alternative to Independents.

He said people will have to decide before the next election if they want Independents or a stable Government of Fine Gael and Labour.

Fianna Fáil's Director of Elections Dara Calleary has said the party leadership is not an issue no matter what the result.

He pointed out the party's vote is up around 7% in the constituency since the last election.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin is set to attend the count later this afternoon.

His party's share of the vote is up since the General Election, but that is unlikely to satisfy the party.

It was favourite to win the by-election, and Mr Martin made several visits to the constituency during the campaign.

The Fine Gael and Labour Party vote shares look to be well down.

Sinn Féin has increased its share of the vote, but not enough to be in contention for the seat.

The Government parties have won three of the four by-elections held since they came into office.

The Socialist Party secured a seat in last May's by-election in Dublin West.
