A 27-year-old forestry worker has gone on trial charged with the murders of a mother and daughter at their home in Killorglin, Co Kerry, in June of last year.
Aurimas Andruska, a Lithuanian national with an address in Killorglin, pleaded not guilty to the two counts of murder when he was arraigned at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Tralee this morning.
The bodies of 27-year-old Jolanta Lubiene and her eight-year-old daughter Enrika were found at their home on 16 June last year.
Post-mortem examinations on their bodies revealed that they died from multiple stab wounds.
A jury of seven women and five men has been sworn in to try the case, which is expected to last around four weeks.
Prosecuting Senior Counsel Isobel Kennedy told the jury that gardaí were called to Ms Lubiene's home after a friend of hers saw her bloodied body on the floor of her kitchen.
Enrika was found soon afterwards lying face down on the landing.
Ms Kennedy told the jury they would hear from pathologist Dr Margot Bolster that she believed Jolanta Lubiene was stabbed in the kitchen area, and had attempted to escape through the back door of the house.
The jury was also told Aurimas Andruska told gardaí after he was arrested that he had called to Ms Lubiene's home with a bottle of rum two or three days before her body was found and they had sexual contact.
Ms Lubiene's husband Marius Lubys and her sister Kristina were in court for the opening of the trial.
Proceedings were translated simultaneously into Lithuanian for Aurimas Andruska and the trial is expected to last around four weeks.
