Nurses protest in Galway over staff shortages

Around 50 nurses have taken part in a protest at Galway University Hospital.

The protest was organised to highlight the pressures caused by a lack of beds and staff shortages at the hospital's emergency department.

Nurses at the hospital say working conditions are compromising patient privacy and dignity.

In a statement yesterday the hospital conceded that there are pressures at the department.

It said it will work to address the staffing issue and that an application for funding to extend the emergency department has been made.

Chief Executive of the West Northwest Hospital Group Bill Maher said he recognised the unions' concerns and that the group was doing all it could to resolve the matter.

Management at the hospital also said yesterday efforts were under way to hire up to 20 new staff.

The demonstrators comprised of members of the Irish Nurses and Midwives' Organisation and members of SIPTU.

Nurses at the protest stressed that patient care will not be compromised by today's demonstration as only staff on lunch breaks or those off-duty took part.

Yesterday SIPTU released a statement calling for the Health Service Executive recruitment embargo on nursing staff and care assistants to be lifted.

It said: "We are also calling on the public health care system to be adequately funded to ensure patients receive the quality service they deserve."

It added that SIPTU members would be standing "shoulder to shoulder with members of other unions" at the protest, to say "enough is enough and the HSE must take action now".
