A murder investigation has begun into the death of Gints Intenbergs in Tullow, Co Carlow.

The body of the 41-year-old, who was from Latvia, was found in the house he was renting on the Graigeowen estate on the outskirts of the town yesterday.

He was found in the kitchen of the house when gardaí were alerted at around 9am yesterday.

Gardaí have not released the findings of the post-mortem examination, but they have changed the status of their investigation to one of murder.

They are not looking for a murder weapon and believe Mr Intenbergs was hit and possibly kicked a number of times in the head and body.

Another man in the house was taken to St Luke's General Hospital in Kilkenny with serious injuries.

Two men were arrested in connection with the death yesterday and are being held in Carlow Garda Station.

They have had their periods of detention extended.

One of the men in custody is from Carlow and aged in his 50s.

The other is a Latvian national in his 30s.
