A woman in her 70s has been seriously injured after a house fire in Co Louth which gardaí believe may have been started maliciously.

The woman, named locally as Eva Berrill, was asleep in the house on Chord Road in Drogheda when the fire broke out.

The blaze was spotted at about 1am this morning.

A man in his 30s managed to rescue Ms Berrill, who is a wheelchair user, from the house.

Ms Berrill was initially brought to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

She was later transferred to St James's Hospital in Dublin for specialist treatment for burns and smoke inhalation.

The man was also brought to hospital with burn injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening.

Gardaí praised the actions of the man who went to the woman's rescue, saying his actions "were essential".

House-to-house inquiries are being carried out in the area and the scene has been preserved.

CCTV footage from the street outside the house will form part of the garda investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Drogheda Garda Station on 041-9874200 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111.

Gardaí are appealing in particular to anyone who was in the Chord Road, Oulster's Lane, Sandyford Terrace, Thomas Street or Scarlet Street areas of Drogheda between 00.30am and 1am to contact them.
