Three killed in Cork and Dublin crashes

Two people have died in a road crash north of Cork city and a pedestrian has died after being struck by a car in Dublin.

A man in his 30s and a woman in her 40s died in the road crash in Cork.

They died when their car hit a ditch at Ballinahina in White's Cross at about 12.30am this morning.

Post-mortem examinations will be carried out at Cork University Hospital.

It is understood that no other vehicle was involved in the crash.

Gardaí are appealing to witnesses to contact Mayfield Garda Station on 021-4558510 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111.

Separately, a pedestrian in his 40s has died after being struck by a car in Dublin overnight.

The incident happened on North Street in Swords at about 3.10am.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardaí are looking for a dark-coloured Volkswagen Golf, which is believed to have fled the scene.

They have asked anyone with information to contact Swords Garda Station on 01-6664700 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111.

Today's deaths bring to 126 the number of people who have died on Irish roads so far this year.

That is an increase of seven on the same period last year.
