A seven-year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital after he was knocked down in a hit-and-run close to his home at Ballymacoda village in east Cork.

The collision happened between 1pm and 1.30pm on the main road through the village.

The child's father and neighbours raised the alarm.

The boy was rushed to Cork University Hospital where he is in a critical condition.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the collision left the scene.

It is understood, however, that he has been traced by the gardaí.

Gardaí believe that the incident may have been witnessed by a number of people.

They are appealing to people who were in Ballymacoda village around the time of the collision and who have not already made contact with them to come forward.

The gardaí can be contacted at Midleton on 021-4621550 or Youghal on 024-92200.
