Wednesday 16 April 2014 16.28 More than 50 jobs are to be shed from Landmark Media, the owner of the Irish Examiner.
Staff were informed of the news at a meeting in the newspaper's Cork office at around 12pm.
Consultations with other members of staff will be going on until 5.30pm.
A total of 560 people are currently employed by the group.
It is understood that roughly half of the jobs will go from the Cork office and half from the group's regional offices.
It is believed the jobs being shed from the Cork office will be voluntary redundancies, while those from the regional offices will mainly be compulsory.
The type of jobs to go will be across the various disciplines.
Landmark Media Investments is the media group that owns the Irish Examiner and regional papers.
It took control of the newspapers as part of a restructuring at Thomas Crosbie Holdings in March 2013.
The group owns Cork's Evening Echo, Waterford News & Star, Wexford Echo, the Carlow, Kildare and Laois Nationalist series, Western People and the Roscommon Herald as well as Breakingnews.ie and Recruitireland.ie.
It is understood the redundancies are to be in the areas of editorial subbing, production and administration.
The group is also seeking cost-cutting efficiencies and staff believe this could mean a reduction in holidays, increased working hours, adjustments to shift patterns and a reduction in maternity leave.
Briefings are continuing throughout the day and the group is expected to issue a statement this evening.
