Tuesday 18 March 2014 14.29 A mother who was due to go on trial for the murder of her eight-year-old son has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Diane Ward of Harrison Place, Charleville, Co Cork, will be sentenced next week for killing her son Anthony at their home on 3 September 2012.
Gardaí initially treated his death as a tragic incident, but a post-mortem examination later showed he had died from asphyxiation.
Ward, 43, appeared at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin today, where she pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter.
The court was told her plea to manslaughter was accepted by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The case was adjourned until next week to allow time for the preparation of psychiatric reports.
Ward was remanded in custody for sentence next Monday.
