A man has appeared in court charged in relation to an alleged assault on a man in Dundalk a week ago.

Charles Hutchinson, 31, from Barton Park in Dundalk is accused of assault causing harm to Laurence 'Michael' McGeown at Fagan's pub in Dundalk last Friday.

Mr McGeown, 63, from Toberona in Dundalk, died in hospital yesterday afternoon.

Mr Hutchinson appeared before Drogheda District Court this morning.

Gardaí gave evidence of arresting and charging the accused and said he made no reply when the charge was put to him.

Gardaí asked Judge William Hamill to remand Mr Hutchinson in custody and they objected to bail being granted.

However, Judge Hamill remanded Mr Hutchinson in custody with consent to bail on strict conditions.

He adjourned the case to Cloverhill District Court until next Friday.
