The New Jersey Republican Governor has found himself in the middle of a growing political row, after further revelations that one of his top aides deliberately engineered a number of traffic jams on one of the country's busiest bridges.
The George Washington Bridge, or GW as locals call it, spans New York's Hudson River, connecting Manhattan in New York City with Fort Lee in New Jersey.
The bridge carries an estimated 300,000 vehicles a day.
Lane closures on the bridge in September, on the first day of school, left traffic backed up for miles, creating havoc for hundreds of thousands of motorists and residents.
Emergency responders were reported to have been delayed in attending four medical situations.
One involved an unconscious 91-year-old woman who later died of cardiac arrest and another a car accident in which four people were injured.
For weeks now, a row has engulfed the governor about suggestions that the lane closures were deliberate and unnecessary.
Critics say the lane shutdowns were retribution against the Democratic Mayor of Fort Lee, who did not support Mr Christie in his bid for re-election.
Emails released this week have added fuel to the row.
They show the governor's aide, Bridget Anne Kelly, writing to a Port Authority executive saying: "Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee".
The executive, David Wildstein, replied: "Got it."
Another message sent during the traffic gridlock from an unidentified official said: "Is it wrong that I'm smiling".
Governor Christie has issued a statement saying he was misled by his staff after the revelations that one of his senior aides was caught up in engineering the traffic mayhem.
He said: "What I've seen today for the first time is unacceptable.
"I am outraged and deeply saddened to learn that not only was I misled by a member of my staff, but this completely inappropriate and unsanctioned conduct was made without my knowledge."
An enormously popular politician, it is widely expected that Mr Christie will make a bid for the Republican Party Presidential nomination in 2016.
However, political rivals have been quick to criticise the governor implying that he knew about the plan in advance.
The emails that were released do not show any evidence the governor knew of the plan in advance, but they do counter earlier assertions from him that none of his staff was involved.
As a result it is a row that is expected to run for some time yet.
