A murder investigation is under way after a man was stabbed to death while minding his grandchildren in Skerries, Co Dublin.

Michael Gannon, 55, died after he was attacked in his daughter's home at Mourne Park yesterday evening.

A 29-year-old man, who was arrested a short time after, is being questioned at Balbriggan Garda Station.

Two homes at the centre of the investigation remain sealed off for a forensic examination - the scene of the stabbing and the scene of the arrest.

Mr Gannon, who was originally from Finglas, had been babysitting his two grandchildren, both aged under five.

Shortly after 6pm, he was attacked and stabbed inside the front door of the house.

Gardaí tried but initially failed to gain access to the house next door to speak to a man there.

Following negotiations they were allowed in and the man, who is originally from Romania, was arrested a short time later.

A knife, believed to be the murder weapon, has also been recovered.

Gardaí have said they are following a definite line of inquiry and are not looking for anyone else at present.

Detectives are trying to establish a motive for the killing.
