Lufthansa Technik Airmotive Ireland has said it is beginning a "process to consider closing the company".

It a statement, Managing Director Wolfgang Moerig said he regretted that the company was at this point.

The announcement follows a review of operations at the Rathcoole plant in Co Dublin.

LTAI said it will begin immediate begin talks with unions and employee representatives over the fate of 400 jobs at the plant.

Unions have expressed fears of substantial jobs losses at LTAI, which maintains aircraft engines.

The company has recently been in dispute with staff over funding a pension deficit recently estimated at around €10m.

During the summer, union members at the company overwhelmingly rejected a proposal for the company to inject €12m to the pension scheme, while staff would have faced some increase in contributions and reduction in benefits.

Arthur Hall of the Technical Engineering and Electrical Union said that if the plant closes, it will be the worst possible Christmas present for the company's 410 employees.

Airmotive was founded in 1980 by Aer Lingus but became part of the Lufthansa Technik group in 1997.

In 2011, it had a turnover of $205m.

At one point it employed 700 people though the workforce is now around 410.
