A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the attempted murder of his lifelong friend.
Patrick McCann of Decies Road Ballyfermot, Co Dublin, shot Luke Wilson three times in Memorial Park, Inchicore causing him to lose an eye.
Mr Justice Paul Carney said the case read like a script from Love/Hate.
The men met in Memorial Park on 13 January last to get a gun, but McCann turned the weapon on Mr Wilson and shot him in the neck, arm and face.
He stood over him and tried twice to shoot him again, but the gun jammed each time.
McCann was sentenced to 20 years for attempted murder with the final three suspended because he pleaded guilty.
Mr Justice Carney said the message was not going to go out from the Central Criminal Court that senior gang figures could have an assassination carried out by preying on someone vulnerable in the expectation that if it fails great leniency will be extended.
