Irish woman says she was kidnapped by drug gang

The Irish woman being held in Peru on suspicion of drug smuggling is not expected to appear before a court until later this week or early next week.

Michaela McCollum, 20, from Co Tyrone has been detained along with British citizen Melissa Reid, 19, for allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine to Spain from Lima's international airport.

Ms McCollum had been expected to appear in court today along with Ms Reid.

Details have also emerged of the explanation that Ms McCollum has given to police.

Both women were arrested in Peru last week on suspicion of trying to smuggle 10.8kg of cocaine to Spain.

Ms McCollum has claimed she was forced to smuggle the material from Peru to Spain.

She has also said that neither she nor Ms Reid were friends or travelling companions from their earlier travels in Europe.

Ms McCollum claimed that she was kidnapped and forced into carrying goods for a gang but that she did not know they were drugs.

She said she did so under the threat of violence and she feared for her safety if she did not carry out the gang's instructions.

She also believed she was being watched by the gang at all times before police in Peru detained her and Ms Reid.

Ms McCollum has met former Honorary Consul for Ireland in Peru Michael Russell, who said the women were being held in a police detention facility rather than jail.

He said Ms McCollum said she was being treated well and had spoken to her family.
