The Garda Commissioner has said the conviction of John Dundon for murder of Shane Geoghegan clearly shows the determination of the Garda Síochana to pursue fully individuals or groups involved serious crime.
Martin Callinan said the verdict in the Special Criminal Court today also endorses the capacity of the State to deal with the most serious and difficult criminal cases.
Dundon, 30, of Hyde Road in Limerick, has been sentenced to life in prison for the killing.
Commissioner Callinan said his thoughts were with the Geoghegan family and that gardaí were aware how difficult a day this is for them.
He congratulated all those involved in the painstaking and lengthy investigation.
Independent councillor John Gilligan, who was mayor of Limerick when Mr Geoghegan was murdered in the city in November 2008, has also welcomed the verdict.
Mr Gilligan said he hopes the verdict brings some closure to Mr Geoghegan's family and friends.
He said the people of Limerick did not just want the individual who pulled the trigger brought to justice, but also those who pointed the finger, who were equally as guilty.
Mr Gilligan said he believes the verdict sends out a signal to all those who take the law into their own hands that such criminality is no longer acceptable.
He also called on the Government not to reduce garda numbers in Limerick as they continue to fight gang crime, saying policing against serious crime could not be done on the cheap.
Fine Gael councillor Michael Hourigan, who is Joint Chair of the Policing Committee in Limerick, said the verdict will reassure Mr Geoghegan's family and the people of Limerick that criminals cannot get away with coldblooded murder.
He congratulated the gardaí for pursuing the case over the past five years.
He also praised the witnesses who gave evidence for their bravery and for helping bring the matter to a conclusion.
He said he hoped it would help more people to go to the gardaí and go before the courts.
