Investigation into 1973 Tyrone murder reopened

A police investigation into the murder of a teenager found at the bottom of a Co Tyrone quarry 40 years ago has been reopened.

Marian Beattie, 18, from Portadown was seen leaving a charity dance in Aughnacloy with an unknown man.

Five hours later, her partially clothed body was found at the bottom of nearby Hadden's Quarry between Aughnacloy and Ballygawley.

Ms Beattie went to the dance on Friday 30 March, 1973 because her brother played in the band.

Detectives are working to identify the man she was seen leaving with just after 1am.

They have appealed for him or anybody with information to come forward.

PSNI serious crime branch detective inspector Peter Montgomery said they believe Ms Beattie and the man went to a nearby car park at the top of Hadden's Quarry about 400 metres away, which was frequented by courting couples.

"Something happened there but we have no evidence to suggest Marian was sexually assaulted."

He said: "Her body was found early the next morning at the bottom of the quarry which is between 80-100ft below the car park."

Mr Montgomery added: "I appreciate this happened a long time ago but we would like to talk to anyone who was at the dance."

Police want to know who Ms Beattie was dancing with and talking to that night.

They are interested in talking to anyone who saw her leave Hadden's Garage or at the Hadden's Quarry car park.

They are also interested in talking to anyone who might remember someone coming home from the dance in a distressed or dishevelled state.
