Seven people killed in Paris train derailment

Seven people have died and several dozen are injured following the derailment of train in Paris.

An intercity train headed for the central French city of Limoges derailed south of Paris, the national rail company SNCF said.

Interior Minister Manuel Valls confirmed, "At this stage there are seven people dead, several dozen wounded and some of them are serious."

"The death toll is evolving constantly at this point and unfortunately it will probably rise," he added.

Images on social media show a train carriage completely off its rails and smashed against a platform at the station of Bretigny-sur-Orge, located about 20 km south of Paris.

SNCF's Jean-Paul Boulet said the train was carrying 350 passengers when it derailed 5.15 pm.

The spokesperson said four carriages piled up.
