Orange Order marches under way across NI

Tens of thousands of people are attending the annual 12 July Orange Parades at 550 centres in Northern Ireland.

Large crowds of spectators are currently cheering and waving union flags in warm sunshine in Belfast city centre.

There are also thousands of Orangemen parading in Derry, as part of its UK City of Culture programme and the participants include the Grand Master of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

North Belfast was tense this morning after the Parades Commission had stipulated that only 100 supporters could accompany the marching bands past Ardoyne.

Significantly greater numbers turned up and were stopped by police.

Eventually a number in excess of the 100 paraded past the silent protesters in Ardoyne.

The area will be heavily policed tonight because for the first time, the Parades Commission has stated the bands will not be allowed to march back up again through Ardoyne.

The decision has angered the Orange Order and it is not clear how that opposition to the Parades Commission will be expressed.

Around 4,000 police officers, including 600 brought in from England, Scotland and Wales, are on duty in case trouble erupts at a number of interface areas.

Short Strand, a nationalist enclave in east Belfast, is another potential flashpoint.

The PSNI said last night was broadly peaceful with isolated minor disturbances in Belfast.

A number of missiles were thrown at several locations.

A 19-year-old man was arrested in Belfast for possession of an offensive weapon, while in Bangor, a 39-year-old man was arrested for possession of fireworks.

Meanwhile, the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) dealt with one call every 77 seconds over a three-hour period last night.

Forty-two incidents were related to "Eleventh Night" bonfires. Only 15 required fire service assistance.

Bonfires were lit across Northern Ireland at midnight to remember the defeat of King James II by William of Orange in 1690.

The NIFRS said the total of 184 fire calls was up by almost 100% on last year.
