A 26-year-old man has been charged with the murders of two brothers in Castlebar, Co Mayo.

Alan Cawley with an address at Four Winds, Corrimbla South, Ballina, Co Mayo was brought before Swinford District Court this morning.

He is charged with the murders of 76-year-old Jack and 69-year-old Tommy Blaine, who were found dead on Wednesday morning at their home on New Antrim Street.

Detective Sergeant Gary Walsh told the court the accused made no response when the first charge of murder was read to him at 1.08am at Castlebar Garda Station.

Mr Cawley did not speak during this morning's hearing.

He has been remanded in custody to appear before Harristown District Court on 19 July.

The funerals of the Blaine brothers will take place in Castlebar on Monday.

The brothers' remains will be removed to the Church of the Holy Rosary in Castlebar on Sunday at 7pm.

They will be buried following 11am mass on Monday.

Floral tributes continue to be left near the brothers' home. Many locals have also signed a book of condolence at the scene.

The book was opened by the Mayor of Castlebar at a brief gathering to remember the men.
