A murder investigation has been launched after a 56-year-old man died in hospital following an attack last night in Athy, Co Kildare.
The man was found in a laneway between St John's Lane and Greenhills housing estate at around midnight. He had been assaulted.
He was taken to Naas General Hospital with what appeared to be a wound to the head, but died there at 5am this morning.
The man was well-known to gardaí as a dissident republican.
He had served time in prison in connection with arms and bomb seizures.
The scene has been preserved for a technical examination and a post-mortem examination will be carried out later today.
Detectives in Athy are appealing for anyone with information or witnesses to contact them.
