A 32-year-old man has been given a ten-year jail sentence for an attack on a woman during which he raped her and threatened to kill her.

The final three years of the sentence were suspended, on condition that the man stays away from the victim of the attack forever.

Mr Justice Paul Carney described the rape as horrific and said the victim had been beaten to a pulp.

Sylvester Torrens of Spring Lane, Blackpool, Cork, was sentenced at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Cork.

He had pleaded guilty to raping the woman in Kanturk in Co Cork two-and-a-half years ago.

He also pleaded guilty to counts of sexual assault and assault causing harm.

The court was told that Torrens had been drinking heavily, had taken cocaine and a tablet that he had been given in a pub and did not know what it was.

Torrens had made advances to the woman during a conversation as they walked from the town together, but she pushed him away.

He followed her back towards the town, grabbed her in a headlock and pulled her into a park.

During the attack, he kicked and punched the woman in the face and kicked her in the groin.

He told the woman he would kill her unless she did what he wanted.

Mr Justice Carney said anyone who took alcohol or drugs in heavy quantities could expect to end up charged with homicide or rape.
