A 43-year-man has been shot dead in Rathcoole, Co Dublin.

Gardaí say the shooting happened at Grants Crescent in the Greenogue Industrial Estate at about 9.30am.

The man sustained a number of gunshot wounds and was taken to Tallaght Hospital where was later pronounced dead.

He is understood to be from Eastern Europe.

A post mortem examination is due to be carried out later today.

The area has been sealed off for a technical examination.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who was in the Greenogue Industrial Estate or Aylmer housing estate in Newcastle between 7am and 10am, and who may have witnessed anything to contact them.

They particularly wish to speak to anyone who saw a silver coloured Audi A3 (5-door hatchback) with the partial registration 05-TN at either location to contact Clondalkin Garda Station on 01-6667600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111 or any garda station.

The Rathcoole premises where the shooting took place is believed to be occupied by Progressive Recycling.
