Gardaí say the man whose body was found at the back of a house in Co Tipperary yesterday has not yet been formally identified.
A post mortem examination is taking place at Waterford Regional Hospital.
Relatives of Bobby Ryan, 52, who has been missing for more than two years, were told by gardaí that it was probably him.
However, formal identification will not take place until after the post mortem is complete.
The body was found yesterday afternoon in an underground storage pit for liquids, not a slurry pit.
It was found in the Fawnagown area between Tipperary and Bansha, not far from where Mr Ryan had lived.
