Two men have been arrested and a number of weapons found during a security operation in Derry.

Officers from the PSNI's Serious Crime Branch stopped two cars in the Northland Road of Derry at around 8pm last night.

A number of guns, a quantity of ammunition and a suspected pipe bomb were found.

Two men, aged 20 and 54, are being questioned at the Serious Crime Suite at Antrim police station.

In a follow-up search of properties in the area, various items, including a vehicle, were seized by police.

A number of homes were evacuated during the security alert.

Residents were allowed to return to their properties early this morning.

Police say the security operation in Derry was part of an ongoing investigation into dissident republican activity.
