GRA to decide on action if cuts implemented

Garda Representative Association members have met to decide on possible action should cuts proposed in talks on an extension to the Croke Park deal go ahead.

GRA members in the Cork North division agreed last night that all forms of industrial action, up to and including full withdrawal of labour, should be on the table if the cuts go ahead.

The Dublin Metropolitan region has voted to ballot members for full industrial action.

Members of the Tipperary division have decided in favour of a "blue flu" action should the cuts be implemented.

Meetings are also taking place in Kerry at district level this week.

A GRA spokesperson said the meetings were being held to consider what to do if and when the proposed cuts go ahead.

The GRA National Executive is meeting tomorrow and Thursday to discuss the situation.

The GRA is also represented at a news conference called by the 24/7 Frontline Alliance today.

PJ Stone said his members are absolutely frustrated, but it is important not to lose public support.

He said: "Captain Bligh had a mutiny because he treated his workforce badly and there is only so much people can take before there is an explosion."

Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation General Secretary Liam Doran was asked whether it will consider industrial action.

Mr Doran said it will take whatever action is necessary within the scope of each organisation.
