A Syrian Foreign Ministry statement carried by the state news agency SANA said the ban would take effect at midnight last night (10pm Irish time).
It said the move was in retaliation after a similar Turkish ban on Syrian flights.
Turkey has not announced such a ban, but said it will ground Syrian civilian planes again if it suspects they are carrying military equipment for the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has also said they would retaliate without hesitation if the border with Syria is violated again.
Tensions between the two countries have increased significantly in recent weeks with Turkish armed forces repeatedly responding to gunfire and shelling spilling across the border from Syria.
The country has warned of a more forceful response if the violence is not contained, while its Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has criticised the UN Security Council for its inaction over the Syrian conflict.
