McConville's son accuses Adams of hypocrisy

The son of Jean McConville - the mother of ten who was abducted and murdered by the IRA in 1972 - has criticised comments made by Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams, who told US television that such incidents "happen in wars".

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Michael McConville said that if it was a war then what happened to his mother was a war crime.

In the interview on CBS' 60 Minutes, Mr Adams said he was not a member of the IRA, and that he had never pulled a trigger, ordered a murder or set off a bomb.

He told interviewer Scott Pelley that he does not "disassociate" himself from the IRA, adding "I think the IRA was a legitimate response to what was happening here (Northern Ireland)."

When asked "how do you orphan ten children, what kind of depravity was that?", Mr Adams responded that that is what happens in war.

"That's what American soldiers do, British soldiers do, Irish Republican soldiers do, that's what happens in every single conflict."

Mr McConville accused Mr Adams of being a hypocrite and said if what happened to his family had happened to an IRA family and ten children had been left orphaned "would he have said the same thing".

Mr McConville said if Mr Adams is saying what happened during the Troubles was a war,  then the abduction, execution and burial of his mother is a war crime.

He said if the same thing had happened in other conflicts around the world, people would have been brought to justice for a war crime.

He also accused Mr Adams of telling lies and said he knew everything that was happening within the IRA because he was a leading figure within the organisation.

Mr McConville said there should be no more political interference in the police investigation into his mother's murder and wanted those found responsible to be brought to the Hague on war crime charges.

Ms McConville was dragged from her home in the Divis flats by an IRA gang in 1972 after she was wrongly accused of being a British informer - becoming one of the so-called "Disappeared".

Her body was eventually found on a beach in Co Louth in 2003.

Mr Adams was questioned by the PSNI last May about her killing.

Her son said today: "If we don't speak out for our mother, nobody will speak out for her.

"These people labelled my mother as an informant, and it's not the case, because every meeting that I've had with the IRA, everything that they told me, all that was proven to be lies."
