Government discussing property tax cap - Burton

The Tánaiste has said a cap on property tax is being discussed by the Government.

Joan Burton described it as a significant issue because rising property prices in Dublin could cause the rates to increase very steeply.

She said a new report on the issue has been commissioned and the Government will be in a position to act after it receives its findings.

The Tánaiste also said that Labour's recent rise in the polls was welcome but that the party has a lot of work to do and a long way to go to get to where they want to be.

Ms Burton also hoped that she would be at the 1916 Centenary commemorations next year as Tánaiste.

But she said there has been no decision to hold the general elections ahead of the centenary in order to avoid the event being taken over by party politics.

She said a date for the election had not been discussed and that the Government's focus was on a broad, inclusive celebration that looked forward to what Ireland does in the next 100 years.
