A man has been arrested in Kilkenny following a nationwide alert in connection with the attempted abduction of an 11-year-old girl in Co Laois.
Gardaí had been searching for him after reports that he put a girl into a vehicle in Cullahill, Co Laois yesterday.
An alert was issued following a series of incidents in the Midlands involving a man believed to be driving a silver Nissan X-Trail 4x4.
The man had been driving around and begging for money, but yesterday gardaí received reports he tried to abduct a young girl.
Gardaí were told the man stopped and spoke to two children in the area before putting the girl into the 4x4,
She managed to escape when her ten-year-old brother jumped on the back of the vehicle.
The man is being questioned at Portlaoise Garda Station.
The stolen 4 x 4 has been located and recovered by gardaí.
