990,000 households register for water charges

About two thirds of those who are liable to pay water charges to Irish Water have now registered with the utility.

Irish Water says 990,000 customers have registered out of an estimated customer base of 1.5 million.

1.237 million people have registered in total.

This figure includes those who will not be customers of Irish Water, but have logged their details for the purposes of claiming the €100 Water Conservation Grant.

Irish Water is urging those who have not yet done so to register, in order to be eligible to claim the grant.

The company says the Minister for the Environment will announce a deadline by which households must register with Irish Water in order to be eligible for the grant, in due course.

Irish Water says it is expecting the registration process to accelerate in the coming weeks ahead of the start of billing next month.

The company says it will begin sending bills out in April, but due to the large volume of customers, this will be done on a phased basis over an eight-week billing cycle, meaning that some customers will not get a bill until June.

A spokesperson for Irish Water said customers could expect to get water bills approximately every 12 weeks.

Meanwhile, TDs affiliated to the Right2Water campaign called for a massive turnout for Saturday's national water charge demonstration.

Protesters will assemble at three locations in Dublin at 1pm - Connolly Station, Heuston Station and Merrion Square - before converging on O'Connell Bridge and holding a rally on O'Connell Street.

All the speakers at the launch stressed that the event would be peaceful and family friendly.

They also said the demonstration will conclude as close to 2.30pm as possible to facilitate those who wish to watch Ireland's final Six Nations game against Scotland.
