The leadership of Ireland's second-level teacher unions are meeting this morning to consider proposals aimed at resolving the ongoing dispute over Junior Cycle reform.
ASTI representatives, including General Secretary Pat King, are at the Gresham Hotel in Dublin for the meeting, which is expected to last about an hour.
They will consider proposals to call off further industrial action to allow for negotiations to take place on the issue of resources for schools.
The proposals come from Dr Pauric Travers, who has been chairing talks between teachers and the Department of Education aimed at resolving the dispute.
In his document, which appears in today's Irish Independent, he calls on teachers to suspend any further industrial action.
He calls on the department to delay the implementation of the next phase of reform, which was to be science.
Dr Travers has said the price of meaningful reform may mean additional resources for schools and he said negotiations should begin as soon as possible on this issue.
This would include negotiations on more teacher time to implement planned changes.
Dr Travers backs Minister for Education Jan O'Sullivan's view that proper reform requires teachers to assess 40% of their own students' work, with a further 60% to be assessed by the State Examinations Commission through a formal written exam.
He suggests that these two aspects should be kept separate, even on the final certificate.
Dr Travers said such ambitious reform requires the wholehearted engagement of teachers.
He says the response of teachers has been influenced by a range of issues, some with deep roots.
Teachers have consistently said they are unwilling to engage in assessment for state certification.
Dr Travis says many teachers have been left alienated and distrustful by salary cuts, casualisation and deteriorating career structures.
