PSNI asks wedding murder witnesses to come forward

The PSNI is following a definite line of inquiry after the murder of a man at a wedding in Co Fermanagh yesterday.

Barney McGinley from Co Longford was shot dead outside the wedding in Newtownbutler yesterday afternoon. He was 63.

Detective Chief Inspector Una Jennings, who is leading the murder inquiry, said police know who the killers are and they are still at large.

She appealed for the suspects to come forward and give themselves up to police or the gardaí, and said they were only postponing the inevitable by not doing so.

She said the key to the murder inquiry lay with members of the Travelling community who attended yesterday's wedding.

She appealed to anyone who was at the wedding and has any information about the events surrounding the shooting to give it to police.

She said if anyone with information was living south of the border, she would ask them to go to the gardaí.

The family of Mr McGinley have commenced preparations for his funeral and interment in Co Westmeath.

The McGinley family are known in business circles in Longford, Mullingar and Athlone.

While the family originally resided in Longford, Barney McGinley and his brothers are involved in several businesses in the Athlone area.

It is understood Mr McGinley's funeral will take place at Coosan outside Athlone in the next few days.
