US President Barack Obama has officially asked congress to approve new legislation to authorise the military campaign against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.
In a letter to congress, he said that although existing laws give him the authority for the current campaign, he would like bi-partisan support from the joint houses.
He has sent them draft legislation which would authorise the campaign but would not allow for long-term, large scale ground operations like those seen in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Mr Obama cited the deaths of four US hostages at the hands of IS and said that if left unchecked, the group would pose a threat to the United States.
The law he is looking for would give permission for ground combat operations such as rescue operations and would allow the special operations forces to conduct missions against IS leadership.
Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell has said senate will "thoughtfully" review Mr Obama's request.
Mr Obama is due to make a statement on this later today.
