Graham Dwyer's adult son was shown still photographs from CCTV footage of his father at Belarmine Plaza in 2012 to see if he could identify anyone, his trial has heard.
Mr Dwyer, 42, from Kerrymount Close in Foxrock, denies murdering 36-year-old Elaine O'Hara on 22 August 2012.
Detective Garda Paul Corcoran told the court he showed a number of still photographs from the CCTV footage taken at Belarmine Plaza to Sennan McShea on 18 October 2013.
Ms O'Hara had an apartment at the complex in Stepaside, south Dublin.
He told the court he was aware Mr McShea was the son of Mr Dwyer and he showed him the pictures to see if he could identify anyone from the stills.
Det Gda Corcoran said Mr McShea would have seen all the still photographs and Mr McShea selected the ones he was most in a position to comment on.
The garda said the ones selected were now exhibits in the trial.
Det Gda Corcoran said he also showed a number of items of clothing recovered by gardaí to Ms O'Hara's sister, Ann Charles.
These included a blue hoodie, vest and tracksuit bottoms.
He said Mrs Charles was in a position to say Ms O'Hara would have worn similar clothing.
Earlier, the court heard that hundreds if not thousands of people are seen on CCTV footage at the apartment complex where Ms O'Hara lived and the majority of them remain unidentified.
Under cross examination from lawyers for Mr Dwyer, Detective Sergeant Kevin Duggan, who was in charge of the CCTV footage, agreed that Ms O'Hara and Mr Dwyer were the only people identified by name in the eight log books compiled by gardaí.
The log books are a record of all the footage from CCTV cameras at Belarmine Plaza between January and August 2012 the court has heard.
The court heard the majority of people are identified simply as male or female.
Yesterday, the court heard Mr Dwyer was seen at the apartment complex on nine occasions between 21 January 2012 and 15 August 2012.
Det Sgt Duggan said that three of the sightings of Mr Dwyer in 2012 had been spotted only on 17 and 18 January of this year.
He said it was not true that they had been missed by gardaí on the first occasion that the footage was viewed. He said the most recent log book was still ongoing.
Det Sgt Duggan was asked to explain by defence lawyer Ronan Kennedy why several entries relating to 29 June 2012 were recorded as "unable to view".
He said up to the point where he was transferred from Dundrum Garda Station on 10 December last year, there had been no difficulty with viewing CCTV footage. He said no one had brought this problem to his attention.
The jury was shown footage today of Ms O'Hara entering and leaving the complex on 22 August 2012, the day she went missing.
Mr Kennedy said it appeared footage of Ms O'Hara at 1pm showed her in the entrance hall but did not show her coming out of the lift or coming down the stairs.
Det Sgt Duggan also told the court one of the first things he did on being put in charge of the CCTV footage, after Ms O'Hara's remains had been found in 2013, was to inquire as to where else gardaí could get CCTV footage.
He said two other gardaÍ were in charge of trying to get footage from other areas.
But he said the lapse of time was the problem.
