The National Association of General Practitioners has called on the country's 2,300 GPs to refuse to sign any contract regarding the Government's proposed scheme of free GP care for under-6s.
It issued a recommendation to members and non-members not to sign any contract because it says the scheme will fuel inequality and injustice.
In a statement, the NAGP said: "GPs have an ethical and moral responsibility to prevent the introduction of a scheme which will only serve to increase the abhorrent inequities in our health service".
NAGP Chief Executive Chris Goodey has said the proposals should be parked for the time being and that medical care should be given on the basis of need and not age.
Meanwhile, the Irish Medical Organisation said medical cards should be prioritised on the basis of income and chronic disease status and that the age of the patient should not be a critical factor when it comes to prioritising the roll out of GP care to the whole population.
In a statement the IMO also said the organisation is fully supportive of GP Care that is free at the point of access, but believes this must be delivered in a planned way with adequate resources.
The IMO added it is in negotiations with the Department of Health and the HSE on both an under-6 contract as well as a wider new GP Contract, which should be capable of providing the means to deliver chronic care programmes.
In December, the Health Service Executive said it hoped to implement free GP care for children under six years by the second quarter of 2015.
